Activity

We focus on developing non-traditional forms of tourism. Our firm belief is that ecotourism and rural tourism complement each other well: the presence of an interesting natural feature in a rural setting can only increase the tourism potential of a region. This idea of complementing different types of tourism has laid the ground for BARET's Bulgarian Trails National Program.

We work in close cooperation with the local municipal administrations, the administrations of natural parks and protected areas, a number of tourist agencies, NGOs, governmental bodies.

We elaborate projects; organize seminars, scientific conferences and trainings; write and publish numerous promotional materials and articles - all committed to developing rural and ecological tourism.

Ecotrails have quickly gained popularity.

2007-2008 Activity Highlight:

We drafted suggestions for creating district and interdistrict tourist products - tourism areas and zones, based on unused natural resources. We held several meetings with municipal administrations, in order to discuss potential action plans.

We took part in the ÅCO-DESTINET project on criteria unification for ecotourism standardization, under the Leonardo da Vinci Program. BARET is partnering with organizations from Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Romania.

We made a concept design of the tourist area "Visok" in Serbia, and we participated in two conferences, in Pirot and in Sofia, where we presented the main idea - a model for the revival of backwards non-urban areas.

We made a concept design of the South Plana Mid-High Mountain Landscape Park - creation of a tourist area in the Samokov District.

Following the invitation of the Borrowed Nature Association, BARET participated in the design and building of the Kaninska Ecotrail in the Western Rhodopes, and in the set up of the major points of interest along the trail.

The Zagrazhden Ecotrail in the district of Banite was added the existing trails network.

BARET's Experts:

  • drafted a strategy for developing non-traditional tourism in the Treklyano District, Kyustendil Region, for the period 2007 - 2013;
  • laid out the theoretical basis of a transborder cooperation project between Bulgaria and Romania: the database of the current state of the environment, as well as a strategy for the reasonable exploitation of natural resources in the districts of Tsenovo (Bulgaria), and Comana (Romania);
  • made large-scale maps of potential tourist sites in the districts of Lukovit, Tsenovo, Ruse;
  • organized seminars on rural and ecological tourism, and on non-traditional tourism development in the districts of Nevestino, Belogradchik, Chiprovtsi, Dobrich.
